Yeon and Jin defiantly find refuge from the outside world in each other's arms. But Jin is on death row, and Yeon is married. Is their love strong enough to break the bonds of social convention? A surreal, dreamlike tale of love in unlikely places, this multiple award-winning film explores love and loneliness against a backdrop of the seasons.
Kim Ki-duk's Breath is a story about finding life (and love) in the midst of death.Yeon (Zia in a captivating performance), withdrawn from life learns about a death-row prisoner Jin, (Chang Chen) who has tried to kill himself by pushing a sharpened toothbrush down his throat. Trapped in a barren marriage that is nothing less than a prison to her, the news of this suicide attempt brings the inert Yeon to life.
On impulse she goes to the prison and asks to see Jin, claiming to be his former girlfriend. Fate (in the form of an invisible prison official) intervenes, and she is allowed to meet Jin. Yeon spends their entire first meeting talking about her near-death experience as a child, but Jin doesn't reciprocate. However as time passes by, Jin and Yeon fall in love with each other, and put their earlier desire to die behind them.
The seasons (that Yeon brings with her into the prison cell) have passed, and Jin's execution is drawing closer. Yeon's husband now starts to demand she stop seeing Jin. Both Yeon and Jin must now make decisions that will be binding forever. To choose life, or death. Together.
