Apprenticeships (4 years)*

Apprenticeship Employers BadgeDuring your apprenticeship you will:

  • Gain real work experience
  • Obtain a higher level qualification - a BTEC equivalent qualification or a Higher National Certificate (HNC)
  • Be paid

During the four years of your training, there will be opportunities to undertake a wide range of activities such as:

  • Hands-on machining experience at an off-site training establishment
  • Commencing studying for a qualification on a day release basis at college
  • Returning to Renishaw to gain experience in machining and assembly. (Day release to college continues until your qualification is completed.)
  • Moving around the company gaining experience in other disciplines (design, R&D etc.) (for Technical Apprentices only). This gives you the chance to consider which part of the company you would like to work in when you have completed your apprenticeship
  • Undertaking company project work

All of the above will give you the opportunity to learn real skills.

Different pathways:

There are two pathways apprentices can take:Gloucester Training Group Ltd logo

  • Technical Apprenticesare required for Mechanical and Electronic Engineering disciplines and will be expected to study to the equivalent of a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in their chosen subject. The first year will involve full-time attendance at an external training facility (Gloucester Training Group (GTG), or GTG) with the remaining time spent in placements around the company’s different departments and continued day release to college (GTG, and Newport in years 3 and 4).
  • Craft Apprenticeswill be expected to study for a BTEC equivalent qualification. Apprentices will be based on-site, with day release to a college from the first year, and will be trained to use advanced CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machines in a hi-tech machine shop environment. This is a more hands-on practical route with less academic commitments, specializing exclusively in the production/machine shop environment with a view to becoming a skilled machinist.

Depending on skills, knowledge and expertise, both types of Apprenticeship normally run for 4 years. When required to spend time on site, Apprentices must be prepared to work at any of the company’s sites in Gloucestershire, and may be required to spend time following shift patterns. Apprentices will also be responsible for their own transport to and from work and college.

Entry level details:

The earliest time an apprenticeship can be started is at the end of year 11, following GCSEs. Students who are currently in year 11 can apply now.

Technical Apprentices require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, and Craft Apprentices require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C and above. Both must include Maths and English, with the others being in subjects relevant to engineering (such as Science, Design and Technology, ICT and so on).

For those applicants who are currently studying their GCSEs, we will review your predicted grades.

During the recruitment stage, we look for the following in all applicants:

  • The ability to demonstrate an interest in engineering or related subjects
  • A commitment to continued studying via day release/evening classes
  • An ability to work using own initiative, follow instructions, be reliable and have a positive attitude

Software Apprentices*

Renishaw plc is currently offering Software Apprenticeships to capable and motivated individuals who want to start a fulfilling and rewarding role as Software Engineers. This structured apprenticeship will see successful applicants working in Group Engineering Software where they will learn core programming skills, in addition to general software design techniques, such as object oriented programming, design methodologies, project management, business analysis and formalised software development processes including Agile.

Learning 'on the job' is key to the Software Apprenticeship scheme, as we believe there is no greater job satisfaction than seeing your own work playing an actual contribution to real products being sold in the field. Working at Renishaw plc means working for a world leader in the supply of highly accurate measurement solutions within the industrial and biomedical sectors. Our products are many and diverse and we supply a wide variety of customers such as:

Biomedical

  • Neurosurgical - planning hardware and software systems for the treatment of such brain disorders as Parkinson's disease
  • Dental CAD / CAM systems in which we design and manufacture dental frameworks to replace damaging or missing teeth
  • Raman spectroscopy systems that can be used in the identification of drugs and explosives by forensic scientists, as well as on the analysis of paint and pigments on historic works of art as an aid to accurate restoration

Industrial metrology

  • Aerospace where we make 5axis contact probing systems capable of measuring the shape of complex engine blades and parts
  • Automotive and other metal cutting measurement systems where we make probing systems that allow parts to be set up accurately before machining and measured during manufacture
  • Non contact data acquisition systems using lasers or cameras that allows us either to build a data cloud of an object being inspected

Of course software exists at many levels from embedded code written on chips, through to middleware (typically the motion control code in our products) and the front end User Interface software required by our customers to program our products. Our Software Apprenticeships allow you to experience all these areas and to build your skills up within your chosen career.
