Q. Briefly tell us about the institute.
The Indian School of Business evolved from the need for a world class business school in Asia. Our founders- some of the best minds from the corporate and academic worlds- visualised the leadership needs of emerging Asian economies. They recognised that the rapidly changing business landscape would require young leaders with an understanding of evolving economies, but also with a global perspective. The ISB is committed to its role in creating such leaders through its innovative programmes, outstanding faculty and thought leadership. We have progressed well and we were in the list of Top 20 B-Schools in the world (as per Financial Times rankings) in 2008 and we repeated our success story by being the 15th ranked B-School in the world in 2009.
Q. What are the courses offered?
ISB offers a unique one-year full time Post Graduate Programme for candidates with work experience, a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship Programme, and short-term executive Programmes for senior executives.
Q. What kind of background and profile does your institute look for in new students?
ISB aims at admitting an extremely talented and diverse student body. We look to having students who have worked in different countries and across industries. They need to be strong academically as the programme is very rigorous. They also need to have potential for leadership. We consider all achievements from school level to the present, including all extra currcicular achievements while taking our decision
Q. Tell us about the admission process at ISB:
For the Indian School of Business, each and every applicant is unique and the school evaluates each student across multiple parameters for admissions. Some of the parameters of evaluation are, Analytical Ability, Leadership potential, Communication and Logical thinking. Leadership Potential is a key assessment parameter. Applicants who have consistently demonstrated an ability to take up initiatives in their work or academic life are encouraged to apply. Leadership is also assessed through recommendations or references included in the application. Students must include recent recommendations from their current workplace, preferably from their direct supervisor. While most applicants may not have had a chance to demonstrate leadership skills at the public level, initiatives at work or in their personal life will help the Admissions Committee assess the applicant’s potential.
Diversity: The ISB welcomes diversity in all forms like work experience, educational background, nationality among others. But above all, the ISB values the quality of the work experience gained by individuals and not just the number of years they have been working in a certain sector. Applicants are encouraged to describe their backgrounds and provide details on how they can contribute to the classroom experience.
Academic Background and Analytical Ability : The programme is rigorous, and since its one year duration makes it even more challenging. Therefore the evaluation keenly considers the student’s academic performance. However there is no cut-off score. Likewise, the ISB also assesses analytical ability based on GMAT. Here again, there is no cut-off GMAT score. While a good GMAT score helps, an average score can be compensated for by achievements in other areas.
Work Experience: The ISB prefers applicants with full time work experience (preferably of two years). The diverse professional experience of students contributes to the rich and stimulating learning in the ISB programme. We are specifically interested in how they have contributed to their organisation or added value to their professional roles. Successful applicants must demonstrate managerial and leadership potential, maturity, drive and focus.
Admissions will evaluate all applications on the above basis. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process
