Ahhh.."Solid Gold". The very title brings me back to my foolish misspent youth in front of the TV, memories of syndicated series past, and just how good the music of the '80s truly was.
Many of you kids reading this now are too wrapped up in your iPods and Good Charlotte and DVDs to know or care what "Solid Gold" was. Well, lemme tell you; it was the only venue wherein the biggest music acts of the day all performed (or at least lip-synched) their songs on stage.
From 1980 to 1988, this was the show everyone watched for music, comedy and entertainment like nothing else. And for the time, it was cool. Oh, and did I mention Dionne Warwick?
For those of you who enjoyed or just want to know what I'm ranting about, here's the intro for a 1980 episode...
Here's a later one with Marilyn McCoo as the host...
Oh, and as far as the music talent goes, how about Air Supply...
The Go-Go's...
Little River Band...
Christopher Cross...
...and Miss Irene Cara, ladies and gentlemen!!
And after the coundown's been done and all the stars given their due, sadly, must come the end of the show. Here's Dionne wrapping things up...
And here's Marilyn's take on the end.
...and since they seem to have left it off on the previous video, here is the end production credit sequence for "Operation Prime Time" (which this was their jewel show) and Paramount Television (don't be scared, now...).
There, now you know what all the fuss was about. AND why the '80s, more than any other decade in man's history, rocked.
Dope out.
