Monocle magazine had a really interesting article about the top 25 most livable cities, but since they are shits you can't access the article online unless you are a subscriber (but it's a really good mag for both gentlemen and ladies).
Instead I found a wikipedia page about it. Apparently the two most credited surveys of livability are the Mercer Quality of Living Survey and The Economist's World's Most Livable Cities. I don't really understand the Mercer one. They score NYC at 100 and then give cities more or less points if they are better or worse in certain categories. Considering not everyone in the world has lived in, or even has been to New York City, isn't that sort of a shitty system?
This is from the Economist:
they rank the cities based on things like public education, health care, crime rates, public transport, culture, environment, and stability.
I still like the article in Monocle best though because it tells a little history of each city in regards to how it's improved and dealing with modern problems in the past 5-10 years and gives you a little summary of all the stats. Copenhagen was number 1.
