BMC mulls giving more power to ALMs | BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has modified its guidelines on Advanced Locality Managements (ALMs) in an effort to "strengthen the relationship between the civic body and citizens".

Under the new draft guidelines, ALMs will be allowed to halt encroachments and illegal hawkers as well as act against unlawfully placed posters and illegal parking. They will also be greatly involved in the segregation of waste.

"Garbage segregation has to be done at homes and the only way to reach out to each and every house is through an ALM. Through ALMs, wet waste will be collected daily and dry waste will be collected twice a week," said additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani. "We are yet to finalize these guidelines and the endeavour is to bring ALMs back on track."

As per the draft guidelines, the BMC will appoint one beat officer and a community development officer (CDO) to work with ALMs. The beat officer will function as the nodal officer, visit the locality regularly to liaise with the local committee and ensure that all issues are resolved. The assistant head supervisor from the solid waste department will conduct monthly meetings. And the assistant commissioner of the ward will survey the area twice a month along with the CDO. Meanwhile, the BMC will set up cells to spread information about ALMs and render appropriate guidance through the CDO. Read More
