Building Contractor
A Building Contractor is an individual that is responsible for the coordination of the construction of residential, commercial and other buildings types or structures. As the person in charge, a building contractor also manages the carpenters and other workers that are employed under their project. They are also the ones who interact with the clients and discuss matters with building professionals such as architects.
Building contractors are tasked to calculate and correctly estimate the quantity of materials to be used, total cost of the project, all while keeping a detailed account of the costs and labor, ensuring the delivery of the needed materials and equipments, facilitating the hiring of workers such as plumbers and electricians, carrying out the desired plans and instructions of the clients as well as adhering to the necessary building standards and safety regulations.
Building contractors need to have building and carpentry skills, while also possessing enough knowledge in building materials and techniques to complete the tasks assigned to them. They should also have effective communication skills when dealing with clients, professionals and local authorities, good organizational skills, management techniques and leadership proficiency in order to execute plans.
Three years of secondary school education is the minimum advised. Focusing on subjects such as English, accounting, technical drawings and mathematics are useful for this careeroption. There are also available programs offered in various universities and colleges that help one to acquire a Certificate in Carpentry.
