this week has been a good one for cooking. the borders near my flat on oxford street is closing down (oh dear, good bye, economy) and everything is 50% off. i bought this amazing chocolate cook book by Green & Blacks that is full of wonderful recipes that i will share once i have successfully conquered them.

also, i bought some red currants, which i had never had before, and i didn't know that you aren't really supposed to just eat them because they a quite sour, so i found this recipe for a tart from a blog called delicious days. i only made half the recipe and put in one less tablespoon of sugar and added some strawberries instead for sweetness. the result reminds me of my granny's strawberry rhubarb pie. lovely for summer tea.

i also found this other food blog which i am into; smitten kitchen.

"the bacone"
i just really like saying "the bacone." it makes me feel like non-homo john travolta's character in pulp fiction. a bacon cone filled with scrambled eggs and country gravy topped with a biscuit.

"the white castle casserole"
six white castle burgers topped with gravy and american cheese baked in a casserole dish. I can't believe that anybody would buy white castle and then use it as an ingredient

"the bulldog"
a hot dog wrapped in american cheese and an eggroll wrapper then deep fried. served with a thousand island and teriyaki dipping sauce. mmmm

"the blitz blintz"
a large meat pizza rolled like a blintz filled with ranch dressing. this seriously looks amazing.

this is why you're fat.

for some reason lately I have been super into americana. the good stuff -- basically, anything that invokes a sort of nostalgia for me, even if I can't place why -- not the incredible myriad of bad stuff. I know america sucks hardcore, but here is some americana stuff I am into at the moment:

my mom just bought me alice waters's the art of simple food because last time i visited her i nearly stole her copy. i guess it's kind of a douchey name, but i think actually most cook books have douchey names.

anyway, the book is amazing because it:

a.) has simples recipes (obvi) that i am into
b.) talks about buying locally and buying what's in season
c.) gives you a lot of useful lists and tips, like how to stock a pantry and different ways to cook rice.

this is amazing. a few months ago when mr jones and I moved in together, I rummaged through gramma jones' kitchen to find some goodies to bring home w/ me and I found this amazing old school spaghetti measurer-outer. it basically looked like a ruler, but had different size holes in it to measure spaghetti for 1, 2, 4, and 6 people.

I wanted to take it so bad but she wanted to keep it (although she hadn't even used it for probably 10 years, slut) and now I can have my very own spaghetti measurer and it is even better!

how it works:

which holes are for how many people (much like a vagina)

how it's multifunctional! debwa loves times ten multifunctionality
