Today is Shab-e-barat, Pray For All

Today is Shab-e-Barat the holy day of prayer and offerings for the muslims. Muslims throughout the world pray whole night from Maghrib in the evening till Fajr in the morning. Peole offer Namaz, recite Quran, Pray for themselves, relatives, those who are no more and others and eat sweets on this day. With the Muslim festival of Shab-e-barat
being observed on Sunday, the police have requested crematoriums across the city to take stringent security measures in view of possible terror threats.
Blasts had rocked the textile town of
Malegaon on September 6, 2006 during the festival of Shab-e-barat when thousands of devotees had gathered at a local mosque-cum-crematorium to offer prayers at the graves of their loved ones. At least 37 people were killed and another 250 were injured in the blasts.
According to police officials, crematorium authorities have been asked to install closed circuit camera televisions (CCTVs) in and around their premises to keep a watch on devotees and anyone behaving suspiciously.
“We have installed six CCTVs inside the
premises, apart from taking a host of
security measures,” said Mohammed Salim Khan, trustee, Sunnat Jamat Masjid and Kabrastan Trust which is located near Raey Road railway station. The crematorium is visited by at least 5 lakh devotees throughout the evening and up to the wee hours of the next day during the day of the celebration.
The crematorium managements have also been asked by the police not to allow persons with bags inside. Apart from that, every belonging visitors bring will be checked by volunteers and private security guards hired for this day.
“Along with making the arrangements, the premises have been surveyed by police authorities,” added Khan. The crematoriums have also been asked to keep the entire area around the premises lit up.
Maulana Azeez Haider, of Rehmatabad
Crematorium in Central Mumbai, said, “We are taking all possible security precautions to make this Shab-e-barat safe for all devotees.”
Sources said that the police administration recently had a series of meetings with the management of city crematoriums to take stock of the arrangements made by them for the festival.

Good Friday to be celebrated today‎

Recent Posts
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It is observed by Catholics across the world during the Holy Week-the last week of Lent.

In India, Good Friday is a Central or Federal Government as well as a State Government holiday. The Stock Markets and banks are closed as it is regarded as a Negotiable Instruments Holiday. Some other businesses are also closed in states where Christians are in considerable numbers viz. Assam, Goa, and Kerala. The majority of business establishments remain open all over the country. Generally, all schools and colleges are closed in India on Good Friday.

"Catholics often choose Good Friday-which is a day of fast-to strengthen their faith, to repent for their wrongdoings and to forgive those who have wronged them."

"Good Friday is also a good day, a day of liberation."

Youngsters today are often enslaved by materialistic pursuits, are often victims of all forms of temptations.

"This is a day youngsters can find the liberation they are seeking, by turning inwards, through prayer, and recognizing the temptations of greed, jealousy, lust etc,"

"Watching the re-enactment of Jesus' sacrifice is not just an emotional moment, it makes people appreciate all those who have devoted their entire lives to serving the lonely, the unwanted, the disabled, the hungry, without seeking or receiving human applause."

Goldwin Fonseca from St Inez says that even Mahatma Gandhi spoke about Good Friday.

He quotes from Gandhi's 'Young India', published on August 11, 1927: "God did not bear the cross only 1900 years ago, but he bears it today, and he dies and is resurrected from day to day. It would be poor comfort to the world if it had to depend upon a historical God who died 2000 years ago. Do not then preach the God of history, but show Him as He lives today through you."

The 32-year-old adds, "It's better to allow our lives to speak for us than just our words. And on Good Friday we get to take stock of whether we are achieving this."

Quoting Jesus' last words on the cross-Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing-retired teacher Margaret Lourenco says the words offer her solace when life throws struggles her way.

"The words give all kinds of human pain and suffering new purpose and meaning," says the resident of Margao.

Provincial of the Salesian province of Konkan Fr Ian Figueiredo feels that the amazing centerpiece of Good Friday is that the God who gave us the freedom of choice, took upon himself, on the cross, the consequences of our wrong choices.

"Our choice to tear down rather than to build up, to lust rather than to love, to compromise rather than to uphold the truth-to name a few," he says.

Pointing out that God could have chosen a less painful way of saving his followers if he so deemed, he concludes, "On Good Friday we are taught, by none other than Jesus Christ himself, that where true love exists, and where there is suffering, then love must be prepared to forget itself and to suffer with and for the beloved."

Airport Metro offers discounted fares on Good Friday

Travelling on the Delhi airport metro line would be cheaper for the next three days as the high-speed Airport Express Line is offering 50 percent discount in fares on account of Good Friday and Easter.

"Commuters will have to shell out only 50 percent of the journey fare. The special discount on the fare begins tomorrow on Good Friday and ends Sunday on the Easter (April 22 to April 24)," the Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited (DAMEPL) official said Thursday.

The Delhi airport metro line is offering discount on its existing fare to popularise the high-speed metro corridor among the public, he said.

The existing maximum fare is Rs.100, while the minimum is Rs.20. The fifty percent discount will be available at all the four operational stations.

The offer will also facilitate passengers who visit the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church, near Connaught Place, on Good Friday and Easter. The commuters can get down at Shivaji Stadium station located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg and reach the Church or Connaught Place.

"This discounted fare will encourage people to take the Airport Metro Express Line, which is the faster way to reach Connaught Place, New Delhi railway station and Chandni Chowk at a minimised cost."

1,111 kg ladoo on Hanuman Jayanti

Recent Posts
A giant modak (ladoo) weighing 1,111 kg was a special attraction on Hanuman Jayanti that was celebrated at Sankat Mochan Temple in the city on Monday.

Unveiling the giant-sized ladoo for the devotees on Sunday, the founder of Dhwaja Yatra (flag procession) that marks the celebrations in the city, Kaushal Sharma said that the prasad was distributed to the devotees on Hanuman Jayanti. It is also one of the biggest ladoo in the region that would be offered to the devotees on the auspicious day, he added.

It may be mentioned here that over one quintal of desi ghee, one quintal of pistas and over two quintals of besan (gram flour) have been used to prepare the special ladoo. The special prasad also features the various forms of 'Bal Hanuman' to attract attention.

Laddu had four Hanuman statues in it showing different childhood phase of Hanuman.
A special 18-day-long flag procession (Dhwaja Pheri) culminating at Sankat Mochan Temple was also marked as the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Monday.

Hanuman Jayanti commemorates the birth of Lord Hanuman.

On this special day devotees visit temples, recite Hanuman Chalisa and Hanuman mantra as every Tuesday puja. Temples also play Hanuman Bhajans for all the devotees and are beautifuuly decorated.

In Maharashtra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra. A special feature of Hanuman Jayanti is that according to some religious almanacs the birthday of Hanuman falls on the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin while according to others it falls on the full moon day in the bright fortnight of Chaitra.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites (World Heritage Day)

World heritage Symbol
Today is The International Day for Monuments and Sites (World Heritage Day). It was created on 18th April, 1982, by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and later approved at the 22nd UNESCO General Conference in 1983.

This special day offers an opportunity to raise public’s awareness concerning the diversity of the world’s heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as to draw attention to its vulnerability.

2011 Theme: The Cultural Heritage of Water
Water is one of the key resources required to sustain life. It has led to the development and generation of significant material culture in the form of items, technology and places.
How to obtain it, how to store it, how to harness its power and conserve it has motivated human endeavour in a myriad of ways. It has also been the catalyst for the development of significant cultural practices which have generated intangible cultural heritage values.

It has inspired poetry, literature, artistic endeavour such as painting, dance and sculpture. It has informed and inspired the development of philosophies and religious practice.
The cultural heritage of water, therefore relates not only to the technology and architecture that humankind has developed to manage, utilise and celebrate its life giving properties but also to those intangible values that have shaped our beliefs and practices.

Some recent World Heritage Day themes include:
2010: Agricultural Heritage
2009: Heritage and Science
2008: Religious heritage and sacred places
2007: Cultural landscapes and monuments of nature
2006: Industrial Heritage
2005: 40th Anniversary of ICOMOS
2004: Earthen Architecture and Heritage
2003: Underwater Cultural Heritage
2002: 20th Century Heritage
2001: Save our historic villages

Gandhi Walk tops list of heritage day events

For first time in the city Amdavadis can take part in a unique 'Gandhi Walk' on Monday.

It will begin from Panchkuwa area at 8 am in the walled city as part of the World Heritage Day celebrations. The walk would introduce participants to the making of the legend Mahatma Gandhi and his trusted lieutenants, who helped him realize his dream of 'purna swaraj'. This walk is being organized by Gujarat Vidyapith students.

Ideas for celebrating the 18th April
While each year there is a specific theme for the 18th April, each National Committee is free to choose a theme that is most relevant to highlight the heritage issues in their nation or region. Below are a number of general suggestions for nationally organized activities to mark this event:
Visits
  • Visits to monuments and sites, and restoration works, possibly with free admission;
  • Specific visits designed for School Children, Youth, Students and young professionals of the field, Experts, the General Public
Spreading knowledge
  • Articles in newspapers and magazines, as well as television and radio broadcasts;
  • Hanging banners in town squares or principal traffic arteries calling attention to the day and the preservation of cultural heritage;
  • Inviting local and foreign experts and personalities for conferences and interviews;
Events
  • Organizing discussions in cultural-centers, city halls, and other public spaces.
  • Exhibitions (photos, paintings, etc)
  • Publication of books, post-cards, stamps, posters
  • Awarding prizes to organizations or persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage or produced an excellent publication on the subject.
  • Inaugurate a recently restored monument
  • Special awareness raising activities amongst school children and youth
  • Promotion of "twinning" opportunities, defining areas for co-operation; exchange of speakers; organization of meetings and seminars, or the editing of joint publications.
The preservation and conservation of our heritage - tangible and intangible - is a critical policy objective that has considerable externalities and positive multipliers. These include tourism, job creation and income generation and other issues, especially the creation of pride among an area's residents in their locality to develop it further.
