How to Check Yourself for Breast Cancer - Tips and Warnings | Breastcancer.org, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, American Cancer Society

With more emphasis on education and advances in technology, breast cancer does not have to be a death sentence. You can do many things to help improve your chances of surviving this disease. The most important is early detection. This includes monthly self breast exams and getting the right tests.

Step 1
Look for physical changes. Notice any changes in the size, shape or color of your breasts. Look for signs of swelling, redness, dimpling, puckering or development of a rash in the skin. Note if your nipple has changed color, position, turned inward, become itchy, scaly or painful. Also examine your nipple for any signs of a watery, milky, yellowish or bloody discharge. Do this exam in front of a mirror with your arms down by your sides and then again with your arms lifted overhead.

Step 2
Feel for abnormalities in the breasts. Lie down and use the opposite hand to breast. For example, use your right hand to examine your left breast. Check a large square area that encompasses all of the breast tissue. This runs a width from your armpit to your breastbone and then from your collarbone to your bra line (where the bottom of your bra would touch). Use the pads of three fingers to make small dime-size circles. Start in one area of the breast. In each area you test, make three circles. Do the first circle with a light touch, the second with a medium touch and then one circle with deeper pressure. As you move from one area to another, keep your finger pads in contact with your skin. Move in an up-and-down pattern.
Step 3

Examine under your armpits. Feel for abnormalities in this area as you did in your breasts, by making small circles. Notice any firm lumps or areas that feel thicker than others. When you lift your arm to examine underneath, just lift it slightly and avoid straightening your arm all the way up. According to the American Cancer Society, "raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and makes it harder to examine."

Tips and Warnings
If you still have a period, do the exam several days after your period ends. If you no longer have a period, choose a day that is easy for you to remember, such as the first of each month. Learn what your breasts normally feel like. Most women have areas of their breasts that are naturally lumpy. Each area of the breasts has a different feel. It may be helpful to use a journal to record the results of your exams so you can compare your exam from month to month. When you first start, have your doctor watch you do a self breast exam to make sure you are doing it properly.

Any changes that last beyond one full cycle of your period and irregularities that get bigger or drastically change should be addressed by your doctor. In addition to monthly self-exams, get mammograms as scheduled by your doctor. A combination of self-testing and professional testing gives you the best chance of catching breast cancer early.

Avastin* (Roche) New York 2011

A panel of cancer experts ruled Wednesday that Avastin - the world's best-selling cancer drug, developed by Genentech in South San Francisco - should no longer be used in breast cancer patients because of concerns the medicine didn't work as well in follow-up studies and may cause deadly bleeding.

Outside advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted 6-0 against Avastin's use in breast cancer at a first-of-its-kind hearing in Silver Spring, Md. Their recommendations will be sent to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, who will make the final ruling on an unspecified date. Avastin will remain on the market because it's approved for four other types of tumors.

The decision capped two days of testimony from patients urging the panel to continue access while FDA scientists argued the drug is too dangerous. A final ruling is at least weeks away while the agency takes comments from the public through July 28. Doctors can prescribe Avastin "off label" in breast cancer even if approval is withdrawn, though insurers may no longer pay the $8,100-a-month price tag.

"There are just so many questions here and the agency has to look at protecting a larger number of patients," said panel member Ralph Freedman, a clinical professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

The panel took a little more than an hour for its deliberations, less than half of the time allotted by the FDA. The advisers also voted unanimously that Avastin didn't have benefits in breast cancer and that its risks weren't justified.

Avastin also is used to treat lung, kidney, colon and brain cancer. Approval for those uses won't be affected by Wednesday's recommendation. Global sales last year were $6.22 billion, or 14 percent of revenue for Roche Holdings AG, Genentech's parent company based in Basel, Switzerland.Read More

An FDA panel has recommended that the drug Avastin no longer be sold as a treatment for breast cancer.

The unanimous recommendation came after experts concluded that Avastin offers breast cancer patients no substantial benefits but at the same time carries substantial risks.

The panel's decision does not affect other uses for which Avastin is approved, including advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, metastatic colorectal cancer, metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and glioblastoma brain tumors.

But if the FDA follows the panel's recommendation, it would be a setback for the treatment of advanced metastatic breast cancer.

The panel's decision was a blow to California-based Genentech, which manufacturers Avastin, known generically as bevacizumab. The company secured fast-track approval for the drug in 2008 after early studies showed it slowed progression of a severe form of breast cancer by an average of 5.5 months.

But later studies failed to back up those earlier findings. The FDA panel concluded that overall, Avastin does not help breast cancer patients live substantially longer or enjoy better quality of life with the disease. The drug carries significant, sometimes fatal, cardiovascular and other side effects.

The recommendation could lead FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD, to suspend marketing of Avastin for the treatment of breast cancer.

"She will make a decision based on all this information," said Karen Midthun, MD, who directs FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. "I cannot tell you at this point when the decision will be finalized and issued," Midthun said, as she ended a two-day meeting on Avastin. Read More

933 - Idiopathic Anaphylaxis

Report: 933 West Virginians Died of AIDS in Past 26 Years
WHEELING - In West Virginia, 2,440 people have contracted HIV/AIDS since the state began collecting data 26 years ago, according to the latest surveillance report. Loretta Haddy, Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services director, said a county-by-county breakdown of the number of cases is not available in the report because of privacy issues.

"The numbers are too small to accommodate your request. ... After 26 years, we're still only at 2,400 (cumulative) cases," she said.

Some counties, she noted, only have one case, which could lead to that person being identified.

"Even our cancer registry data, it was 10 years before we released it by county," Haddy noted.

However, the document, titled "West Virginia HIV/ AIDS Surveillance Report 2009 Update," does give numbers by district. For example, District 6 includes the Northern Panhandle counties of Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel. Tyler County is in District 5.

Data for 2010 is expected to be released in about a month.

According to the 2009 numbers, West Virginia had a total of 69 HIV/AIDS cases. And in 2009, 26 people statewide died because of HIV/AIDS. Cumulatively, 933 people have died during the past 26 years as a result of the disease. And in 2009, there were 1,507 people living in the Mountain State with HIV/AIDS. District 6 had 173 cases in 2009. Five of the state's eight districts had more cases than District 6. Of the 173 District 6 cases, people 25-34 years old had the highest number at 63. More males (138) than females (35) were infected. And more whites (153) had the disease than people of other races. Read More

Etymology
Trigonella is a latinized diminutive of Greek trigonon [τρίγωνον] "triangle", composed of treis [τρεῖς] "three" and gony [γόνυ] "knee, angle" (see also Vietnamese coriander); it probably refers to the triangular shape of the flowers. Cf. also the Yiddish term for the genus, draykantl [דרײַקאַנטל] "three-edged".

The Latin species name foenum graecum means "Greek hay", referring to both the intensive hay fragrance of dried fenugreek herb and its Eastern Mediterranean origin. That Latin name still lives in many European tongues, e.g., English fenugreek or Dutch fenegriek. Note that in some of these languages, the name for fennel may look similar, because "fennel" also derives from Latin foenum "hay".

Other languages use adaptions of foenum graecum, like Slovak grško seno "Greek hay" and Estonian kreeka lambalääts "Greek clover". Despite the strong association with Greece, the classical Greek name of fenugreek, telis [τῆλις], has vanished without a trace from modern languages (maybe with the exception of Bulgarian tilchets [тилчец]?).

Several Germanic languages have closely related names, e.g., German Bockshornklee, Swedish bockhornsklöver and Norwegian bukkehornkløver "buck’s horn’s clover". These names refer to the long, pointed fruits (legumes) which may be compared with a buck’s horn. Similar names meaning "buck’s horn" are also given to the large pods of St. John’s Bread (Carob) regionally.

Spanish alholva and Portuguese alforba are, like many other plant names used on the Iberic peninsula (see also capers), borrowed from Arabic: al-hulbah [الحلبه] "the fenugreek". The Arabic name hulbah [حلبه] is probably a native Semitic name deriving from the same root ḤLB "milk" that also lies behind the name of mahaleb cherry. In that case, that name would have been motivated by the strong galactagogue action of fenugreek which is widely used in folk medicine. The Hebrew cognate is hilbeh [חילבה], which appears in Yiddish as khilbe [כילבע].

Arabic hulbah is also the source for several names of fenugreek in Far Eastern languages: Malayalam uluva [ഉലുവ], Sinhala uluhal [උලුහාල්], Malay halba, Indonesian klabat, Chinese hu lu ba [葫蘆巴, 胡芦巴], Vietnamese ho lo ba [hồ lô ba] and Korean horopa [호로파].

Middle Persian sambalidag is the predecessor of modern Farsi shanbalileh [شنبلیله] or Urdu shanbalid [شنبلید]; it has been borrowed to Russian as shambala [шамбала]. Akkadian šambaliltu belongs to the same group, although the word is cetrainly not Semitic. Rather similar names are found in the Baltic countries (Finnish sarviapila, Latvian sierāboliņš), yet I do not understand the connection (if there is any). There is also a puzzling close match between Sumerian sullim [] and Georgian solinji [სოლინჯი], with no similar forms in adjacent languages. Read More

Fenugreek

Now, the benefits of fenugreek and its seeds can be reaped by everyone as it is easily available in the form of fenugreek capsules. They are available as 500 mg, 580 mg, or 610 mg capsules, and the dosage may vary depending on the purpose for their intake. Here we will talk about the different benefits of fenugreek capsules, and the possible side effects one may experience upon an overdose of this herbal medicine.

Fenugreek Capsules Benefits
The benefits of consuming fenugreek capsules are several. They aid a variety of processes in the body, that help us lead a healthier life. Let's understand the effects of these capsules on our body.
Enhances Milk Production in Lactating Women
One the most important benefits of fenugreek tablets or capsules is that it aids the lactation process in mothers, by increasing milk production. This is possible by following a fenugreek capsules dosage of 500mg, 3 times a day. The results will be effective in about 3-4 days. Take a look at fenugreek for lactation.
Cures Heartburn
Fenugreek has a cooling effect on the body, and as such is an effective remedy for heartburn and acidity problems. Take a capsule before every meal, to relieve yourself of the symptoms of acid reflux, and further prevent it.
Effective Remedy for Menstrual Cramps
Taking these capsules during the menstrual cycle, can relieve a woman of all its effects such as painful cramps, fatigue, hot flashes, and mood swings. Just take one capsule twice a day, and you are sure to be free of these symptoms. Discontinue the dosage when you feel relief.
Reduces Cholesterol
Studies have shown that taking 56 g of fenugreek a day can reduce cholesterol levels in the body, over a period of time. This means 5 fenugreek capsules in a day (580 mg each). Consume it with a herbal tea such as green tea, that will aid the process of lowering cholesterol levels better. Consuming fenugreek with green tea is also a great soothing agent for the stomach.
Controls Blood Sugar Levels
These capsules have the capacity to lower blood sugar levels and keep them under control, particularly among those who suffer from Type 2 Diabetes. The recommended dosage for such patients is 1 capsule (580 mg), two times a day.
Remedy for Skin Problems
Fenugreek capsules also affect the skin, they clear out boils and acne, and are even effective for severe problems such as eczema, burns, wounds and rashes. You may also crush a fenugreek capsule, mix it with a very small amount of water, and apply it topically on the affected area for effective results. Consume two capsules daily, for the effect to materialize over time.
Induces Labor
Pregnant women who may be overdue can consume fenugreek capsules to induce labor, as it helps in uterine contractions. However, it is not always safe for pregnant women, and should be consumed only after consulting a doctor.
Increases Libido
Since these capsules have the capacity of eliminating fatigue and depression, they also work as stimulants that help increase one's sex drive.

female genital mutilation, female genital mutilation video, foeticide, genital mutilation, anaemic, infanticide

Female genital cutting (FGC), also known as female genital mutilation (FGM), female circumcision, or female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), is defined by the World Health Organisation as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons." When the procedure is performed on and with the consent of an adult, it is generally called clitoridectomy, or it may be part of labiaplasty or vaginoplasty. It also generally does not refer to procedures used in sex reassignment surgery, and the genital modification of intersexuals.

FGC is predominantly practiced in Northeast Africa and parts of the Near East and Southeast Asia, although it has also been reported to occur in individual tribes in South America and Australia. Amnesty International estimates that approximately 2 million girls undergo FGC every year. Opposition is motivated by concerns regarding the consent (or lack thereof, in most cases) of the patient, and subsequently the safety and long-term consequences of the procedures. In the past several decades, there have been many concerted efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO) to end the practice of FGC. The United Nations has also declared February 6 as "International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation". Read More

San Francisco Circumcision Ban Referendum Stirs Debate Over Anti-Semitism
Matthew Hess says he decided to wage a crusade against circumcision after he noticed a decline in sexual sensation in his late 20s and concluded that the removal of his foreskin as an infant might be responsible. “It’s damaged my sexuality and it’s changed my life,” Hess, 42, said in an interview. “I’ve dedicated my life to bringing an end to this practice where I might otherwise be doing something else. It also robbed me of what nature intended as far as my sexual experiences.” Hess is behind a referendum in San Francisco that would make it illegal to circumcise boys under the age of 18. The November ballot, coming in a city that has previously outlawed plastic shopping bags and free toys in McDonald’s Corp. (MCD)’s Happy Meals, worries some Jews and Muslims, who circumcise boys as a religious rite, and some physicians who point to health benefits of the procedure.

Acrimony grew when Hess created a comic called “Foreskin Man,” where a blond, square-jawed, caped superhero confronts Monster Mohel, a grinning, sinister Jew holding scissors over a baby boy. That changed the debate over the initiative, state Senator Mark Leno said in an interview. “The images are blatantly anti-Semitic,” Leno, who is Jewish and represents part of San Francisco, said June 10. “They are literally pulled from Nazi literature.” Hess said that in a different issue of the comic, a doctor trying to perform a circumcision transforms into a monster. No anti-Semitism is intended, he said.

“Anyone who circumcises children will not be drawn favorably in ‘Foreskin Man’ comic books,” Hess said. “It doesn’t matter whether they’re Jewish or what they are.”
‘Clear, Compelling, Immediate’ Under Hess’s proposal, circumcisions performed for other than a “clear, compelling and immediate” medical need would be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of as much as $1,000 and up to a year in jail. The penalty would give a circumcised man “more legal standing to complain and file suit after the fact,” said Lloyd Schofield, 59, who is spearheading the effort in San Francisco. The goal is to extend state and federal laws shielding girls from genital mutilation to boys, Hess said. “I feel that boys should be protected from forced genital cutting the same way that girls are,” he said.

Opponents have formed a coalition called the Committee for Parental Choice & Religious Freedom, whose members include religious groups, doctors and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the equivalent of the city council. The pro-circumcision group is raising money and planning to get its message to voters, said Abby Michelson Porth, associate director of the Jewish Community Relations Council in San Francisco, in a June 9 telephone interview. Religious Freedom “We think the ballot measure, in addition to being illegal, if passed would deal a significant blow to parental choice and religious freedom,” Porth said. “The Jewish community has practiced circumcisions for thousands of years. It is integral and fundamental to our faith.”

The San Francisco Elections Department certified the proposal as qualifying for a vote on May 17 after supporters gathered 12,271 signatures, about 5,100 more than needed, said Rachel Gosiengfiao, the department’s campaign services manager. “In San Francisco, you can get 12,000 signatures attesting the world is flat,” said opponent Edgar Schoen, a clinical professor of pediatrics emeritus at the University of California in San Francisco. Schoen questioned Hess’s comparison of male circumcision to female genital mutilation, saying that procedure requires removing the clitoris and part of the labia, and sewing the labia together.

“If you were to do the equivalent operation on a man, you’d have to cut off the whole penis and part of the scrotum,” Schoen said in a June 10 telephone interview.
Fewer Newborns While 79 percent of adult males in the U.S. report being circumcised, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent analysis shows newborn circumcision at 55 percent in 2005, Scott Bryan, a CDC spokesman, said in an e-mail. Research has shown that male circumcision “significantly reduces” the risk of HIV acquisition by men, the agency said.

Hess, whose group has waged unsuccessful efforts to advance his proposal in the Massachusetts Legislature and in Santa Monica, California, said that HIV prevention isn’t enough justification for circumcision. A similar argument could be made for amputating the breast tissue of infant girls to prevent breast cancer, he said. “If you cut any healthy body part off of someone, that body part is no longer subject to disease,” he said. Brian McBeth, a mohel, the term for a person who performs Jewish circumcisions, said the practice is significant to Jews.

‘Connection to God’
“It represents a connection to God and a commitment that God has made to the Jewish people,” said McBeth, an emergency- room physician from Saratoga, California, who performs circumcisions in San Francisco. “If it were to pass, you would find Jews moving outside the city limits to do this procedure.”

Schofield, who said he met Hess last July at the 11th International Symposium on Circumcision, Genital Integrity and Human Rights at the University of California, Berkeley, said religious arguments are beside the point. “Just because you’ve been doing something for a long time doesn’t make it moral, ethical or even legal,” he said in a June 13 telephone interview. “We didn’t come at this from a religious angle whatsoever. We came at this from the angle it’s the right of the child and human being to have intact genitals.” Read More

The mission of this Scientific Research on Innovative Areas, “Exploring molecular basis for brain diseases based on personal genomics” is to establish the new research paradigm to explore molecular basis for brain diseases based on personal genomics. This projects consists of three areas; 1. Development of technologies to enable personal genome analyses with high accuracy, 2. Development of “cutting-edge” informatics for analyses of personal genomne, and 3. Identification of molecular basis of brain diseases including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, amyotrohic lateral sclerosis, spinocerebellar degeneration and schizophrenia based on personal genome analyses. Integration of the above three disciplines will be the key for the innovative research fields.

Personal Genome
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) employing common SNPs with minor allele frequency usually larger than 0.05 have recently revealed numerous variants associated with diseases. Such variants, however, usually have limited effect sizes, hence we are yet to understand the entire molecular basis for brain disease. Previous clinical genetic analyses suggest involvement of strong genetic factors. To identify the “missing heritability”, we need to focus on rarer variants based on comprehensive personal genome analyses. Given the enormous information obtained by next-gen sequencers, analyses of personal genome are a challenging mission in terms of sequencing, informatics and genetics. Integrating the three disciplines of sequencing, informatics and genetics, this project will explore the molecular basis for brain diseases based on personal genomics. Read More

Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) - yök, adalet bakanlığı, aiö, meteoroloji, oyunus

Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG [from the German Elektrokardiogramm]) is a transthoracic interpretation of the electrical activity of the heart over time captured and externally recorded by skin electrodes.[1] It is a noninvasive recording produced by an electrocardiographic device. The etymology of the word is derived from the Greek electro, because it is related to electrical activity, cardio, Greek for heart, and graph, a Greek root meaning "to write". In English speaking countries, medical professionals often write EKG (the abbreviation for the German word elektrokardiogramm) in order to avoid confusion with EEG.[citation needed]

The ECG works mostly by detecting and amplifying the tiny electrical changes on the skin that are caused when the heart muscle "depolarizes" during each heart beat. At rest, each heart muscle cell has a charge across its outer wall, or cell membrane. Reducing this charge towards zero is called de-polarization, which activates the mechanisms in the cell that cause it to contract. During each heartbeat a healthy heart will have an orderly progression of a wave of depolarisation that is triggered by the cells in the sinoatrial node, spreads out through the atrium, passes through "intrinsic conduction pathways" and then spreads all over the ventricles. This is detected as tiny rises and falls in the voltage between two electrodes placed either side of the heart which is displayed as a wavy line either on a screen or on paper. This display indicates the overall rhythm of the heart and weaknesses in different parts of the heart muscle.

Usually more than 2 electrodes are used and they can be combined into a number of pairs (For example: Left arm (LA), right arm (RA) and left leg (LL) electrodes form the three pairs LA+RA, LA+LL, and RA+LL). The output from each pair is known as a lead. Each lead is said to look at the heart from a different angle. Different types of ECGs can be referred to by the number of leads that are recorded, for example 3-lead, 5-lead or 12-lead ECGs (sometimes simply "a 12-lead"). A 12-lead ECG is one in which 12 different electrical signals are recorded at approximately the same time and will often be used as a one-off recording of an ECG, traditionally printed out as a paper copy. 3- and 5-lead ECGs tend to be monitored continuously and viewed only on the screen of an appropriate monitoring device, for example during an operation or whilst being transported in an ambulance. There may or may not be any permanent record of a 3- or 5-lead ECG, depending on the equipment used.

It is the best way to measure and diagnose abnormal rhythms of the heart,[2] particularly abnormal rhythms caused by damage to the conductive tissue that carries electrical signals, or abnormal rhythms caused by electrolyte imbalances.[3] In a myocardial infarction (MI), the ECG can identify if the heart muscle has been damaged in specific areas, though not all areas of the heart are covered.[4] The ECG cannot reliably measure the pumping ability of the heart, for which ultrasound-based (echocardiography) or nuclear medicine tests are used. It is possible to be in cardiac arrest with a normal ECG signal (a condition known as pulseless electrical activity). Read More

Heart With No Beat Offers Hope Of New Lease On Life
The search for the perfect artificial heart seems never-ending. After decades of trial and error, surgeons remain stymied in their quest for a machine that does not wear out, break down or cause clots and infections. But Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier at the Texas Heart Institute say they have developed a machine that could avoid all that with simple whirling rotors — which means people may soon get a heart that has no beat.

Inside the institute's animal research laboratory is an 8-month-old calf with a soft brown coat named Abigail. Cohn and Frazier removed Abigail's heart and replaced it with two centrifugal pumps. "If you listened to her chest with a stethoscope, you wouldn't hear a heartbeat," says Cohn. "If you examined her arteries, there's no pulse. If you hooked her up to an EKG, she'd be flat-lined."

The pumps spin Abigail's blood and move it through her body. "By every metric we have to analyze patients, she's not living," Cohn says. "But here you can see she's a vigorous, happy, playful calf licking my hand." Read More

Aneurysm Tampa, FL 33618 2011 Florida

Aneurysms: Super-glue-like fluid gives new hope
An aneurysm is a blood vessel that stretches and sometimes bursts. For about 25,000 Americans every year, a ruptured aneurysm leads to severe disability, or even death, according to The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. But there's a new treatment, a kind of super-glue for the body, that is now saving lives, CBS News Correspondent Don Teague reported on "The Early Show."

He said that, for nearly three decades, Amy Bechtold has served her country as a colonel and judge in the Air Force JAG Corps. Bechtold, chief regional judge of the Air Force Trial Judiciary, said, "We all raise our right hand to support and defend the Constitution, as a trial judge, I'm doing that very directly."

With tours in places that included Bosnia and Afghanistan, she's seen her share of danger, but a tiny brain aneurysm is what nearly cost Bechtold her life. Bechtold said she knew exactly what aneurisms were because her father had an aortic aneurism years ago. Bechtold heard ringing in her ears. A doctor's visit revealed an aneurysm tucked behind her optic nerve. She was told she needed surgery immediately. Maj. Christopher Koebbe, M.D., Bechtold's neurosurgeon, explained an aneurysm is a blister or a bulge - a weakness along the wall of an artery.

He said, "The danger of an aneurysm is that it could rupture, causing a massive brain hemorrhage. If that were to happen, there would be a 50 to 60 percent chance that a patient would die or be disabled from that hemorrhage." Ten years ago, Koebbe would have attacked brain aneurysms through invasive open surgery with large incisions in the skull. But new technology has been a game-changer. Read More
