Google is taking a chance that its Internet browser Chrome is unhackable by offering the hackers out there $20,000 if they can do it. Not only will a successful hacker get the cash, but they also get a CR-48 Chrome OS notebook.

The offer is part of the company’s fifth annual Pwn2Own hacking contest, which is scheduled for March 9-11. The contest is a part of the CanSecWest security conference held in Vancouver, British Colombia.

This year marks the first time prize money has been part of the deal and the first time Google has joined in the contest. Besides Google’s addition, there is a total of of $125,000 in prizes up for grabs to anyone who manages to hack the participating browsers and mobile devices. If anyone manages to crack Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox they will win $15,000. In addition, anyone who hacks Windows Phone 7, iPhone 4, BlackBerry 6 OS, or Android will get $15,000 plus a device running the operating system.

The competition focuses on two main technologies: web browsers and mobile devices. The object of the Pwn2Own contest is to empirically show what the security is on today’s current devices.

Google says it’s pretty sure about its Chrome browser. One interesting note was that Google didn’t offer any cash to a hacker who could crack the Android operating system. This causes one to ponder on whether or not they believe in its security.
