monalisa, mona lisa, la ultima cena, parrillas, la mona lisa, que corazon late mas rapido; “The Missing Piece”: documentary recounting theft of Mona Lisa

For the centenary of the theft of the Mona Lisa, writer Joe Medeiros has created a complete documentary about the painting known in France as La Joconde. The documentary is entitled “The Missing Piece” and promises to unveil the secrets around this legendary theft.

The author is fascinated by the theft of the Mona Lisa that occurred on 21 August 1911 at the Louvre. An Italian immigrant and house painter called Vincenzo Perugia stole the canvas from the museum and kept it in his Parisian flat for two years. He was arrested when he returned to Florence and gave the painting to an Italian art dealer. Perugia affirmed that he robbed the piece to return it to the Italian people.

“The Missing Piece” recounts the story of this historic theft. Medeiros met Perugia’s great-granddaughter, Celestine, aged eighty-four. He asked her to explain the reasons for such a crime. The ill and elderly woman evoked the shame that had surrounded the family since the event and declared they rarely talked about the subject at home. She too was apparently searching for the truth. A group of researchers looked through the Louvre’s archives and over time, diverse documents and letters were found, enabling researchers to gain insight into Perugia and understand the true motives for the crime.

“The Missing Piece” is a unique documentary that recounts a breathtaking story. It was directed by Joe and Justine Medeiros and will be released on 21 August 2011. Read More
