Girls’ Generation (SNSD) Group Profile and Biography

Girls’ Generation is one of South Korea’s most popular female pop groups. The girls are well known across Asia with hit songs like Gee, Genie, Oh, and Hoot etc.

Girls’ Generation is often referred to as Soshi, or SNSD by international fans – abbreviation of the group’s Korean name, So Nyeo Shi Dae (소녀시대, or So Nyuh Shi Dae). The nine members of Girls’ Generation are Hyoyeon, Jessica, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Yoona and Yuri. Check out SNSD member profiles.

SNSD made their official debut in August 2007 with single Into the New World. They released their first (self-titled) full album in November, with its second track Kissing You a hit. The album was re-released as Baby Baby in March 2008. The girls also worked in various (solo) projects, e.g. in reality shows, dramas and radios etc.

SNSD released a mini-album, Gee, in January 2009. The title song was a mega hit, breaking various #1 records on music charts. They released their second mini-album, Tell Me Your Wish in June, which was hugely successful as well.

SNSD continued to excel in 2010 – with their second full length album, Oh! in January; a repackaged album, RunDevilRun, in March; and their third mini-album, Hoot, in October – all were best sellers as expected. The group also made their official Japanese debut in September, with single Genie which reached the #4 spot on Oricon weekly chart.

SNSD released their first original Japanese single, Mr Taxi, in April 2011. They released their first (self-titled) full-length Japanese album in June, which reached the top of Oricon weekly album-sales chart. Read More
