“3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy” has taken the box office by storm after it opened in packed cinemas across Hong Kong last Thursday, outselling James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure “Avatar” on its opening day and breaking Hong Kong’s one-day record for box office takings, en route to reclaiming its producer’s earliest record for the highest-grossing Category III (equivalent to R-rating) movie of all time notched by the 1991 original “Sex And Zen”.
The 3D erotica, touted as the world’s first stereoscopic 3D softcore porn, raked in HK $2.79 million (US $360,000) on its first day, according to the Hong Kong Motion Pictures Industry Association.
This trumps James Cameron’s 3D extravaganza “Avatar”, whose opening gross in 2009 was HK $2.5 million, and more than doubled the HK $1.2 million opening of Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution.”
The latter triumph was particularly sweet for the producers of “3D Sex And Zen” as previously “Lust, Caution” broke the record held for 17 years as the highest-grossing Category III by the 1991 original “Sex And Zen”also from the new version’s producer Stephen Shiu Sr.
Ang Lee’s 2007 spy thriller grossed HK $49 million to become the top Category III film of all time in Hong Kong, overtaking the 1991 original’s HK $20 million.
The world’s first 3D IMAX erotic film snatched HK $13 million (US $1.7 million) during the four-day weekend period in Hong Kong which was another record. Similarly in Taiwan, it was also the weekend champ with NT $15 million (US$515,000) within three days.
The movie also attracted flocks of tourists from mainland China, where the movie is unlikely to screen without severe cuts due to strict censorship laws.
Loosely based on Li Yu’s 17th century classical Chinese erotic literature “The Carnal Prayer Mat”, this 3D remake of the record-breaking 1991 Hong Kong box office cult classic erotica “Sex and Zen” stars Japanese AV actresses Yukiko Suo and Saori Hara opposite Hong Kong-based Japanese male model Hiro Hayama. Other cast include Vonnie Lui Hoi Yan, Leni Lan Yan, Tony Ho Wah Chiu, Irene Chen Chiu Ping, Jason Yiu and Tenky Tin.
Set in the Ming dynasty, the movie tells the tale of a sexually frustrated scholar, who after being introduced into the world of an aristocrat, realises his ex-wife is the love of his life.
The story revolves around the classical Chinese novel The Carnal Prayer Mat depicting the sexual exploits of a young Ming Dynasty scholar named Wei Yangsheng.
The groundbreaking adult film features a surprising amount of nudity (including frontal nudity) and camouflaged lovemaking scenes. Admittedly it’s all boobs and bums, with anything more revealing carefully obscured by a cocked leg or well-positioned vase, but rest assured the good-looking cast remain disrobed for most of the film.
According to reviews, the film is very well made and played fabulously well to the local crowd who were hooting and laughing from start to finish. Sex And Zen is a very funny movie – one loaded with great sight gags and memorable characters. It is a circus of erotic and violent spectacles.
It’s all naughty good fun and there isn’t a single boring scene. From the moment the first pair of jiggly 3D breasts appears — prompting collective gasps from the male audience members — through to the fight scenes with 3D daggers thrown at the audience, this is 3D movie magic at its low-brow erotic best. At one point a meter-long 3D horse penis is thrown towards the flinching audience.
