Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

BEFORE YOU READ THIS REVIEW:
----------
Rest assured, all those of you who have yet to see this film, I'll only be discussing semi-general details herein. So, no Crystal Skull spoiler worries. You're welcome.
----------
Alright, kids; this is the big one - the one I've been waiting my whole life to review. Well...the one I've been waiting to review since I got home after seeing it a few moments ago, anyway.

Unless you've been living in a coral grotto off the Great Barrier Reef, you're familiar with the exploits of Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) as he globe-hops to exotic locales, seeking out great archaeological finds, unimaginable treasures , making powerful enemies and attracting pretty nice babes along the way, too.

His past triumphs had been well-chronicled in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, not to mention TV's "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles", all a product from the lens and mind of Steven Spielberg (as well as George Lucas). Action, adventure, drama, romance, thrills, chills, spills and ills (i.e.: some very effective "yuck" moments, re: Temple of Doom) mix very well together, as evidenced by the fact that if you type "Indiana Jones" in Google, you get at the very least 51 million hits. So there you go.

And just like every teen in '81, I crowded into my local theater with other like-minded movie-goers, yearning to see what all the excitement was about. I fell deeply in love with the action and adventure of the original. The second one, not so much (SPOILER HERE:why make Indy a bad guy half-way through? Arrgh...), The third one, very good and it had Sean Connery, too! I even enjoyed the series, which kinda surprised me.

Imagine my delight when I learned that Spielberg and company were revisiting Indy territory at the behest of the millions of fans out there (and apparently Ford too, since he reportedly said that if they didn't come up with something by 2009, he wasn't participating). Sorting through a mountain of scripts, possible storylines and what characters to bring back, they finally came up with a product to unleash on the fans on May 22nd.

I was 10 days late, but I made it. Sinking into my theater seat with my box of Raisinettes, remembering the last time I was waiting to see Indy on the big screen ('89), hoping that they didn't trash past memories of my cherished classics (you know, like Lucas did with Star Wars prequel Attack of the Clones - sorry, George.) and that I would get new memories to cherish.

And then the Lucasfilms logo came up and I whispered to myself, "here we go..." in anticipation.

The story is as so: in 1957, Jones is urged by young motorcycle-riding greaser Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) to find mutual friend Dr. Oxley (John Hurt), who was seeking a mystical crystal skull, also coveted by Russian agent Spalko (Kate Blanchett) and her full retinue of soldiers who will do anything to ensure their success. Along the way, there are action, adventure, double-crosses, surprises attacks, shocking revelations and unsuspected appearances - all in a days' work for an archeology teacher.

First of all, Ford fits back into Indy's skin quite comfortably, albeit that skin is older and wearier. Not that this is a complaint - why should we expect our heroes to never age - Indiana Jones is no Dorian Gray, and the more rugged they look the more hope we can hold out for ourselves that we end up as good as that when we reach that milestone in life. He still cracks his whip, dodges bullets, throws punches, cracks wise and shows the same fire for life and thrill of discovery as he did so many years ago. And that fedora could fit on no one else's head but Ford's.

Shia LaBoeuf surprised me. Literally; I never cared much for him anyway (I was very underwhelmed by him in Transformers, the only other movie I saw him in), but as Mutt, he offered a characterization that is actually pretty darned good. He has personality, grace, humor and throws himself into the action scenes quite well. Certainly a step up and an equal to Indy. Maybe it's just his name I can't get around (Shia?), but anyway....

Blanchett makes a suitably over-the-top villainess, and she is obviously enjoying her thick Russian accent and sabre-wielding skills. Karen Allen reappears as Marion, Indy's old flame, and that spark is back; maybe it's just me, but I always loved her spunk and fire in Raiders, and she is no different here - her and Indy's verbal sparring is a lot of fun. Hurt has little to do but he does it well; playing doddering characters seems to be his forté anymore. Ray Winstone has a smallish part as a comrade of Indy's and, though his part is broadly featured, didn't really leave that much of an impression with me. He's no Sallah: 'nuff said.

Spielberg's contributions are apparent: much is made of back-lighting, people staring intently off-screen, parental issues and mysterious other-worldly awe. And as evidenced by certain scenes in movies throughout his career, no one else can make use of the widescreen quite like Steven Spielberg. And it is filled with some pretty amazing scenes and set-pieces: the vast New Mexico desert, the lush jungles of South America, even the Georgian brick of Connecticut are beautiful and vast in their scope.

And there are some parts you will be talking about breathlessly and happily after seeing them: The first 15-or-so minutes are absolutely wonderful, stretching as they do from the sandy wastes of Roswell, the military hangar, fight through to freedom, and Indy's escape by...well, I'd better not; you'll enjoy what you see: and most assuredly, where he ends up after escaping is another exciting set-piece in and of itself. Then there are a motorcycle chase through Indy's beloved Marshall College campus, the escape through the jungle by means of various mechanical and natural means, the discovery of an ancient Mayan temple, the....

Okay, you'll be glad that I restrained myself as well as I did. It's just the excitement of the initial viewing getting to me, making me want to spill all the beans in this movie I can possibly spill. But I won't; I can behave just like any other breathless fanboy.

But as far as the movie goes:

Is it a perfect companion piece to the series? Absolutely.

Is it corny? Sure, and so are several other moments in all 3 previous entires.

Will it be good to see Indy again, or will I cringe at Ford trying to do stunts he did back in '81? Yes, it will be - and no, you won't be.

Is it worth seeing in a theater? I can wager if you are a fan of the series, you will want to see this in a theater: ninth row from the front, aisle seat (that's my fave spot - best sight line and good acoustics, too).

So as a final note, let me just add that I took my 12 year-old son to see IJATKOTCS with me and he, like I was back in '81, was thoroughly enraptured with what he saw. As we left the theater, he was walking alongside, breathlessly praising every single scene, quoting line after line, humming John Williams' still-rousing score and asking when we can go see it again.

That's my boy.

smile w/ your eyes, tyra

you have got to be kidding me. the ny times mag this week has a major article on tyra banks and whether or not she is the next oprah or martha, and blah blah it is boring. but! it shows some of the 275 smiles (seriously) that tyra claims to have mastered.

(click to see the beautiful glorious ravishing exquisite smiles bigger)

and it includes the infamous "smile with your eyes" compared to "smiling w/o your eyes"

oh man. tyra is SO my favorite person to hate. but, I actually hate her. she loves herself enough for everybody in the world. fucking cunt rag.

top 8 moments in the price is right

somebody (a genuis, if you may) made a top 8 video list of the price is right . . . and it is amazing!
some of the videos include "greatest reaction ever" and "worst bid ever," but I personally thought this one was funny

"420 guy"

and that reminded me about a thing on the soup about a (recent) price is right where the person is a complete idiot. it is hilarious. you know how it is a strategy to bid one dollar over the person before you? I think this lady got a bit confused.

new music

hoxton has played host to two lovely festivals in the past couple of weeks; stag and dagger and hox to dot. I was really into them both because i got to see bands i am into, but also i got to find out about new music i had never heard (which is one of my favorite things in life). Here are two:

Primary 1: basically the talking heads of 2008. they have a great frontman.

Juiceboxxx: if you don't find his milwaukee nerd voice instantly endearing, his beats and rhymes will surely do the trick.

notice his nerd-core style. he was wearing the unicorn shirt with lightning bolts when he played.

oh and i also watched euro-vision for the first time ever, which is a music contest were about 25 european countries submit an act and they all perform and everyone votes on who is the best. but the acts are usually people who are semi-big in the country, just not world wide. russia won and they had one of the worst songs, but at least i got to see france, which was AMAZING. they entered sebastien tellier, who i already know a little bit via the club scene, but never really paid attention to before because i thought he made boring house music (WRONG). He had 5 lady back up singers all wearing fake beards like him and rolled up onstage in a golfcart, looking like a character from the big lebowski/ royal tennenbaums and sang a really chill song. it was just so good.

p.s. does anyone in the world know how to post music on blogs?

what it's really like at disneyland

so this dude played jack sparrow at disneyland and got fired after a few months (mostly for being late, nothing salacious), and he totally spilled what really happens behind the scenes. this is something I've always wondered about -- I feel like they try and keep it super secret and now I've broken into the club! eeeee

the dude and his gf who played ariel (which wasn't allowed . . . they aren't supposed to interdate. racists.)
Here is the beginning of the article!

Like everyone, I grew up going to Disneyland. Even as an adult I loved it there and went at least once a month. I was an annual pass holder, though not like the freaky ones you may have heard of. I’d see the park’s characters and think, “It’d be so cool to work here.” But there was never a character I really wanted to play. I had a role on the television show Veronica Mars and was working at Coco’s when a friend told me Disneyland was casting a Jack Sparrow character. I had already played Jack as a hobby at San Diego’s Comic-Con and the Renaissance Faire.
Thirty-seven actors showed up that day, four of us in costume. Only eight were chosen for the next round. We were told we would be auditioning the next day at Disneyland. When I showed up, there were now 23 guys—15 that had been pulled from in-house auditions. There was this assistant who would come in and pull people one by one—“Steve, can you come with me?” Then you’d never see Steve again. Finally I was sitting all alone in the room. After 15 minutes they pulled me into another room where two other guys were sitting. They told us we were going to be Disneyland’s first Jack Sparrows.

Disney warned us we were going to have a lot of horny women coming on to us. They were also worried about girls. I heard Disneyland had an Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She was very flirtatious, and they finally pulled her because men found her too sexually arousing and were acting out.

The male character they had pulled was Tarzan. He moved around the tree house dressed in just a butt flap. Disney had hired these good-looking, muscular guys—even airbrushing abs on—and apparently there was excessive pinching of Tarzan’s ass by the park’s female visitors. Knowing all this, and also knowing what women were like around Jack at the Renaissance Faire, I told the other guys, “Don’t complain if girls flirt with you too much. If you do, they’ll pull the character from the park.”

What's With This Summer's Blockbusters?

Okay, first off, I have NOT seen any of these movies I'm about to write about, so all I'm about to say is based on what I've heard. Be warned.

NOW...

So far, everything I've read about 2008's summer movie crop shows this year should be a big one. After all, what with gas prices and ticket prices and uncomfortable seats and overpriced popcorn and so on, if you're gonna slap down your hard-earned bucks to spend two hours of your life watching something some film executive thinks would be worth your time (and money - see a trend here?), it had better be good.

And with that in mind, what do we have here to consider?

Well, let's see....

IRON MAN

http://www.moviesonline.ca/movie-gallery/albums/userpics/poster_IronMan_comicon.jpg

I've read the comics when I was younger and thought the story of multi-millionauire Tony Stark wearing a cool suit just to live and finding he had super powers with it and being able to fight crime, save the world and so forth was pretty darn cool. Hearing about the movie being made based on it, all I could think of was "great; another superhero movie in a world filled with 'em." - but there was one major plus in this one that so many others didn't have:

Robert Downey Jr.

http://www.aolcdn.com/red_galleries/robert-downey-jr-iron-man-400a062507.jpg

Not since Errol Flynn has there been such a talented, troubled and quirky actor; one who takes a lot of chances and does so with lots of on-screen charisma. If anyone could pull off Tony Stark, it would be him.

Of course, the special effects in the trailer look good. But nowadays, watching a movie because the effects are good is like buying a car because the tires are round. It's a given. But with a strong story, good actors (Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges are also in the cast), decent-enough director in Jon Favreau, though he isn't the first one you think of as an action superhero director. But if all the stars are aligned and everything clicks, it could work.

And according to the initial take, it has.

MY VIEWING POSSIBILITY: Possible. Not an easy-in, since I'm kinda burnt-out on superhero movies but I do like the actors involved. We'll see.

SPEED RACER

I loved the cartoon (oops: anime. Sorry....) and thought the stories were rather intricate and action-packed, even if the characters all moved their mouths kinda funny. :P Little did I know as an ankle-biter what a cult following the show would have over the years since its initial run.

Anyway, everyone reading this knows what kind of track record the Wachowski Brothers have had (The Matrix Movies, V for Vendetta, etc.) , so there is every possibility that there is going to be smashing visuals and effects rather on the wild side.

Well, good lord, have you seen the trailer?!!!

You see that?! Huh? Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed those visuals and they didn't give you an epileptic seizure, then say hello to your new favorite film.

[me]Hello, new favorite film.[/me]

MY VIEWING POSSIBILITY: Very high. I try not to connect my want to see a film on a cool trailer (I've been burnt on that road before), but how many chances during one lifetime will you have to see so kinetic a film as this? Not many, I'll wager. I may take the Wachowski's bait on this one.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN
http://snarkerati.com/movie-news/files/2007/12/prince-caspian.jpg

I never was a fan of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe on reading it, nor when it was a cartoon or when it was a made-for-TV special. It was just a little too stodgy for my taste.

Granted, they gave the 2005 film the right amount of action, CGI thrills, talking animals looking as real as anything and everything a fan of the book could want (maybe; I don't know that many book fans). But this sequel (the first of three more) looks like more of the same. Great if you're a fan of the first film; interminable if you're not a fan of C.S. Lewis or instantly dislike the staleness associated with Walden Media films...like I do.

MY VIEWING POSSIBILITY: No. My kids will probably love it, but then again, they dislike watching any film that feels like a homework assignment to sit through.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL
The image “http://thecia.com.au/reviews/i/images/indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull-poster-1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Oh well gee, let's see: a chance to see Harrison Ford reprise one of my favorite action heroes ever? A return to the kind of film Steven Spielberg was once the king of? The re-teaming of Ford and Karen Allen from the original Raiders of the Lost Ark? One more opportunity to hear that rousing John Williams theme in the cool comfort of a movie theater and relive grand memories from my past? And to take my son to see adventure films the way they used to be?

MY VIEWING POSSIBILITY: Heck, yeah. Lukewarm to poor reviews be damned. I will revisit my youth and enjoy it profoundly. And probably stand and applaud at the end of it and embarrass my son. Oh well.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK
The image “http://dietrichthrall.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/incredible-hulk-poster.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
I thought the 2003 Hulk was kinda talky and cerebral for the crowd it was being pitched to and Ang Lee, while a good director, wasn't the best choice for a summer popcorn movie about a green monster whose dialog consists mostly of grunts.

So here we are, five years later and looking at a continuation of the first film with an entirely different cast and director and, judging from the initial trailer, more of an emphasis on the kind of summer action we expect, mixed with more of the comic book sensibilities we know and love. After all, this one is directed by Louis Leterrier (director of the Transporter movies) and stars Edward Norton (who we all know can carry a movie), Liv Tyler ('scuse me...rowr), William Hurt and Tim Roth...so we all know that acting won't be a problem.

It could work, I guess, I just hope we aren't going to experience a superhero movie glut in which they just export mass movies like this without any thought or detail - just lots of great effects, recognized stars and flimsy story-lines that wouldn't pass muster in the Marvel universe, let alone the Hollywood universe.

Time will tell.

MY VIEWING POSSIBILITY: Lower spectrum. I love the comics, but the big guy doesn't have the best filmed record. It might be pulled off successfully, but this will probably still be an on-down-the-road rental.

Well, that's a good start. There's a lot of movies coming out this summer, and next post I'll tackle the others. And don't worry; my next post won't be in September. :P

Dope out.

Can't get you out of my head, In your eyes, Wow, Shocked, Like a drug, Slow (σε μία απίστευτη electro εκδοχή), 2 hearts, On a night like this (μια από τις καλύτερες στιγμές της συναυλίας), Your disco needs you, Love at first sight, Spinning around, Kids (αυτό τώρα τί της ήρθε να το πει?), In my arms, Step back in time, I believe in you (σε μια πολύ όμορφη ballad version), Loveboat, Copacabana (διασκευή της μεγάλης επιτυχίας του Barry Manilow), I should be so lucky (το άφησε για το τέλος κι έγινε ο χαμός!).

Μοναδικά αρνητικά η έλλειψη του καλύτερου κομματιού της καριέρας της από το setlist: "Confide in me", τα "Stars" και "The one" (θα είναι το νέο single και το είπε live μόνο στην Γαλλία) τα οποία είναι από τ'αγαπημένα μου από το "X", και η απουσία ολόκληρης ενότητας στην οποία εμφανίζεται ως manga girl κι ερμηνεύει τα "Come into my world", "Nu-di-ty" και "Sensitized". Ήταν too much!

eerie and beautiful

I came across these post-earthquake photos in china of couples who had just been married in front of an old French missionary church. they were there taking their wedding photos when the earthquake hit. they are scary and it is such a dichotomy.

before the earthquake
during/just after
during/just after
after the earthquake

also, they mentioned the great hurricane of 1938 that happened in long island and rhode island and was completely unexpected w/ no warning. the link is a (short-ish) transcript of a super interesting pbs show about it w/ first-hand accounts, and bears striking similarities to katrina (houses demolished by water, people looting all of the stores b/c it was the great depression and nobody had any money), but I don't know if the government helped them out or not. fucking gov.
